Sewing Tips For Parents

I frequently get asked which sewing machine is best to buy for their children. Which is a question I LOVE because it means they are loving sewing and creating! So here are my top tips:

• Stay away from the mini/midi/kid sewing machines. They are not a huge amount cheaper and they always have issues with the stitch tension - causing instant frustration.

• Equally, you don’t need to buy an expensive machine with loads of pretty stitches. They will never get used!

In class we use the Brother LS14s. You can buy it from Argos or John Lewis and I am sure many other places. It is a basic sewing machine model and will be very similar to many others - as long as it has a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch you can’t really go wrong.

Below are some videos demonstrating how to thread a bobbin, insert a bobbin and thread up the sewing machine. Most machines will have a very similar set up to this.

Need some more help? I can run a private lesson to help you get to grips with your sewing machine. This would be held at your home with your sewing machine and would include creating a simple beginners project such as a wallet or bookmark.
